Spiritual Disciplines
Training Our Lives to Look Like Jesus
Dallas Willard writes, “True transformation is possible if we are willing to rearrange our lives around those activities that Jesus engaged in to remain in continual fellowship with His Father and to receive continual power from His Father.”
Spiritual disciplines are not the goal of the Christian life. Becoming like Christ is. Disciplines are simply the means God uses to shape us from the inside out. When people see our lives, the hope is not that they would say, “Wow, that person knows the Bible,” but rather, “That person reminds me of Jesus.”
To live as Jesus would live if He were in our place, we must train our lives around the practices that enabled Him to flourish. Below are several foundational spiritual disciplines that help form Christlike lives.

Solitude
Solitude creates space to be alone with God. Richard Foster describes it as the doorway into deeper communion with Him. In solitude, we step away from noise, demands, and expectations and linger in God’s presence.
It is there that our souls are nourished. It is there that we are reminded we are beloved, treasured, and rejoiced over by our Father. Transformation often happens best in quiet places where love is freely received.

Journaling
Journaling is a written record of our spiritual journey. It helps us slow down, process what God is doing, and notice patterns of growth, struggle, and grace. Writing can bring clarity to thoughts, prayers, and moments where God is at work in our lives.
Silence
Silence strips away distractions and exposes what is truly happening inside us. Dallas Willard notes that silence can be uncomfortable because it forces us to face ourselves honestly.
Yet silence also positions us to hear the voice that matters most. Turning off the constant noise of life allows us to rest in God’s presence and rediscover that we do not need noise to survive. We need Jesus.

Fasting
Fasting is the intentional abstaining from food or other comforts to heighten our dependence on God. It reveals how easily we rely on things other than Him for satisfaction and security.
Through fasting, God teaches us self-control and reminds us that He alone sustains us. As Jesus said, we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from God.

Prayer
Prayer is far more than presenting requests or reciting familiar words. At its core, prayer is about relationship. It draws us into the heart of God and teaches us to live there.
Through Jesus, we have full access to the Father. Prayer becomes the key that opens the door to intimacy, friendship, wisdom, rest, and renewal. God invites us not into formality, but into closeness.

Bible Study
Paul writes in Romans 12:2 that we are transformed by the renewing of our minds. Lasting change happens as our thinking is reshaped by truth.
Immersing ourselves in Scripture renews our minds, aligns our hearts with God’s will, and helps us discern what is good, pleasing, and perfect. God’s Word forms us in ways nothing else can.

Spiritual disciplines are not about earning God’s love or proving spiritual maturity. God already loves us fully. Disciplines simply place us where His transforming power can work.
Becoming like Jesus will not happen by accident or by trying harder. It happens as we intentionally arrange our lives around practices that keep us connected to God.
Transformation is possible. And it begins when we choose a life of spiritual training.
